Fugue, Single-channel video, 24’51,2020
In early January 2020, in the County of Jing （泾县, 安徽省）, a county of which a large part were undergoing demolition and rebuilding, I accidentally witnessed an audial-sensory fishing by Mr. Ma and his fellow fishermen who utilized the cormorants to fish. I was deeply attracted by their vocal imitation of the cormorants’ howling to hurry the birds to fish for them – it is obviously a skill that requires years of feeding, caring and training the cormorants, in the cormorants’ language. I was intrigued by the anti-industrial, symbiotic, audio-visual practice and the cormorants’ perspective. I started filming them with my phone in the town.
